About the Book
During my first visit to Shanghai, I had a moment of inspiration. At one point, I looked down and noticed the bright red shoes of our friend who was showing us the city, and for the rest of that trip I continued to look down to see what might catch my eye. That led me to become fascinated by the workmanship of utility access covers - manholes - and I kept a lookout for them on every trip that I took after that.
