An actor embodies a character by using his or her voice, mannerisms, gestures, and emotions. He or she often is required to memorize the words from a script, thus giving a voice and life to the character he or she is portraying.

An understudy is an actor who learns a role and sometimes multiple roles in order to perform as a replacement if the lead becomes absent.
