About the Book
In 2020, photographer Janice Checchio revisited a past project with the goal of taking a unique, daily self-portrait for the entirety of the year, exploring what could be created as a photographer, mother, and partner. The unexpected challenge of the Covid-19 pandemic added the extra facet of how to be all those personae simultaneously. Or make the decision to choose one over the others.
It created a situation that exacerbated what women have long-experienced — the struggle to "have it all." Having it all was never meant to be simultaneous. The frustrating reality of parenting, working, and making time for art — often at the same time — forces one to reckon with the idea of not being everything to everyone, all the time. There always needed to be a choice.
This companion book to '366' presents photos that were created as part of '366' alongside outtakes of what the other part of that reality looked like — a child demanding love and attention.
