About the Book
This guide to the Jewish press in the Russian Empire before 1917 covers over 520 periodicals in Hebrew, Yiddish and Russian, indicating the place and time of issue, subordinate titles, slogans, editors, publishers, price, circulation, political orientation and other information. The guide is provided with the geographical reference. The reference data are preceded by an introductory essay divided into twelve chapters on the methodology of studying the Jewish press, its history and structure, readership, party and language differentiation. This English book turned out to be more detailed and comprehensive than my original Russian guide. For instance, some extra publications, including those that were only ever planned but not published, have been added. Some statements in the text have been revised and the reference data have been clarified. I would like to hope that this guide will serve as a good tool for searching and finding a way through that vast array of information which was the Jewish press in the Russian Empire.
