About the Book
Martha Dickson Skinner Gerardo was a brilliant painter who lived and worked in relative obscurity in the San Francisco Bay Area. A close contemporary of Joan Brown, she too was mentored by Elmer Bischoff, a leading member of the Bay Area Figurative Movement. After her MFA years in the late 1960s, during which she was a rising star in the Berkeley Art Department, Martha withdrew from art circles and struggled to define her own path. This exhibition catalog accompanied a retrospective of her work at the Piedmont Center for the Arts in August 2021. Tracing her artistic trajectory, it explores the reasons for Martha's about-face and celebrates her life and work.
