About the Book
I live near a number of wonderful urban ponds and I walk around them frequently and have for years. I usually take my camera, so I’ve spent a lot of time looking and shooting. What has captured my attention has been what happens at the edge, the space where the shore meets the water. Stray leaves, roots, branches, rocks in and near the water, and, especially reflections and light provide rich possibilities for images.
My series “The Edge of the Pond” captures these haphazard assemblages.I love the visual confusion in these images; I love that you have to look carefully to figure out basic information, like which way is up and what is reflected and what is real. This echoes my instinct that life is considerably more complex and nuanced than I usually assume.
