About the Book
Where science, art and music composition intersect. “The Well-Tempered Dinoflagellate” is a 78 page sound score created by the DNA sequence responsible for bioluminescence in the dinoflagellate (Pyrostisis) micro-organism. The 6-hour musical score was originally produced as an audio recording for the art installation “What is the Shape of Water?” at the Light City Festival at IMET in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor in 2019. Using a system built by the artist, the installation allowed the dinoflagellates to bioluminesce according to their own DNA. In the spirit of John Cage and Dick Higgins, this book can be used to create sound and musical improvisations, or enjoyed as a collectable. To hear the composition or learn more about the project, see the artists website and select "What is the Shape of Water?"
