About the Book
A simple switch of gender and some minimal changes to the original story line create a very different Taming of the Shrew. Katherina becoming Mateo, the unmanageable son of a rich merchant. Petruchio becomes Petrucia, a Sicilian woman, who tames the unruly Mateo. The Sicilians present the original Shakespearean dialogue (Sicilian dialect) while everyone else speaks contemporary English. This play is intended to be read by middle school age students. For high school theater groups, the mixed dialogue provides a range of roles to suit a group’s experience and talent. Stronger students can perform the original Shakespeare while other cast members deliver a less difficult (for both performers and audience) conversion of the play.
