About the Book
Blocks of Stone: 1893 was a year one could dream of a future Utopia. It was the year the great Columbian Exposition showed us the gleaming, faux marble, Beaux Arts plazas of White City as the nation was wired and electrified, and across the country city planners were at work on new plans. Half way up Connecticut's Naugatuck River, a wealthy industrialist hired McKim, Mead and White, foremost architects of the age, to turn the place known as "rubber city," into City Beautiful. Their work is mostly intact and is the subject of these photographs and narrative.
