About the Book
This is Book three in a four book series celebrating, mostly in photographs, the landscape and traditions of the Yorkshire Dales. Since the photographs were taken traditions have been overtaken by modern influences and the overwhelming growth of tourism to the area. These books are an attempt to record and remember some of the unique attitudes and agricultural systems that flourished in the Dales grown and nurtured to a large degree in isolation from the historical and cultural issues influencing the rest of England. This thaird book focuses on the gathering of sheep from the common moorland 'Gaits' in the sparsely populated high country between Upper Wharfedale and Wensleydale and the preparation and grooming for the annual Hawes Sheep sales.
