About the Book
Back portraits examine the nature of photographic portraiture, specifically whether the photographic description of surface tells us anything about the subjects' interior character and psychology.
Taken between 2003-08, the three quarter length portraits in this series are rear views, they are mainly non-gestural, static, standing female figures. They have turned their backs on us and the world and seem self absorbed in the study of the surface in front of which they stand. Without eye contact we are unable to look through this 'window' into the 'soul', yet although we are aware of what isn't displayed we cannot help but guess at personalities through the posture and clothing of the sitter.
