About the Book
Foreword by Shelley Rhodes,
It is such a privilege to share this amazing work from my, Finding Fragments course. I love the variety of techniques, different approaches and individual presentation, which make this a really exciting exhibition of contemporary mixed-media work.
The starting point was observing and responding to fragments from walks, travels, gardens or personal collections. Stitch techniques found in Japanese Boro and Kantha were explored but exaggerated and distorted using non-traditional materials. I introduced different exercises throughout the course, and I encouraged everyone to be adventurous and try everything, but eventually, I wanted them to follow a path that resonated with them personally. This led to the creation of work that is unique and true to themselves, as well as bringing them joy and pleasure which, I think really shows through their work.
When working in collage, whether using fabric, paper, found objects or a combination of all these things, the key to success is placement. Considering how one fragment connects with another to achieve balanced yet exciting, visually stimulating work is not easy. It can cause angst and frustration - it takes time constantly placing, moving, flipping, rotating or replacing until everything comes together and it ‘just works’. Being brave enough to cut up, rearrange, move sections, remove elements or add items that didn’t originally belong can make very exciting work. I think you will agree that the pieces displayed in this exhibition work beautifully. Some are sensitive and quiet, others bold and colourful, but each one is full of intrigue and interest.
