About the Book
This book follows the training and deployment of pilots and observers in a Day Bomber squadron of the Royal Air Force in France in 1918. Drawing from personal letters, diaries, interviews, and official squadron records, the narrative follows the operations that No. 98 Squadron undertook at the Western Front, and puts their missions in context with the events occurring in the war. Included are photographs from private collections. Also included are drawings and excerpts from an airman's log book, and lecture notes. There is an emphasis on the personal experiences of airmen of the Squadron, as they performed their duties. It follows technological development of aircraft and the equipment that they used, from training to carrying out missions across the lines.
The cadets of the Royal Flying Corps had comraderie and a call to duty. This is the story of No. 98 Squadron and the men that answered that call, with dedication and courage.
