Jonathan Farmer Dew was born in Nash County after the death of his father, Jonathan Dew. When he reached adulthood, Jonathan Farmer Dew moved to Floyd County, Georgia, where he farmed, but he was also a businessman in neighboring Gordon County. He accumulated a significant fortune before the Civil War, but was almost destitute at the war's conclusion.
