About the Book
The author’s photographic work serves as a poignant reflection on her 26-year experience living under dictatorship in East Germany. Delving deep into the emotional aftermath of restrictions and control, she meticulously works with historical materials gleaned from personal and public archives. For this project, she unearthed secret documents and objects that wielded power, their existence unknown to her before 1989.
One example is her manipulation of facsimiles of her own secret file, which revealed the invasive scrutiny of her mail. She also created photographs of three-dimensional objects based on formerly secret data used to control citizens. While autobiographical elements undoubtedly shape this body of work, the primary emphasis lies in the formal and structural aspects of the retrieved data.
Her goal is to transmute this information into abstract, visually striking formations, offering a stark juxtaposition to the destructive violence of the regime. Through her art, she seeks to capture the essence of resilience amidst oppression, transforming darkness into a semblance of beauty and simplicity.
