About the Book
History of the Comox Valley Writers Society was written to celebrate the 60th anniversary of this small non-profit organization of writers. The Comox Valley is located on the eastern shore of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. Activities of the Comox Valley Writers Society are documented by decade, in the context of socio-political events affecting literary arts in Canada. Hidden in the pages are the changes from longhand to keyboarding, from typewriters to home computers, from snail mail to the Internet. Small presses evolve, chain bookstores appear, National Book Weeks disappear, and self-publishing arises. It could be the story of any community writers' group during this time period, but there were very few. The story is important as a small community illustration of the evolution of writing in Canada, for the camaraderie and support of writers, and the longevity and success of the group. Inspirational quotes by Canadian authors and summaries of Governor-General and Stephen Leacock Award winners are included.
