About the Book
Okefenokee Christmas
In the story "Okefenokee Christmas," a young boy named Seab Kennison ventures into the Okefenokee swamp to find a Christmas tree. He encounters a fierce and mysterious woman named Maud Mudd, who refuses to let him cut down any trees on her land. Seab leaves, disappointed, and boards a logging train to return home.
Meanwhile, Maud Mudd reflects on her life and her success in the swamp. She is known as the "Queen of the Okefenokee" and has built a fortune without the help of a man. However, her thoughts are interrupted when her workers demand more pay. Maud confronts them with her bullwhip and forces them to continue working.
Later, Maud has a vivid dream in which she is visited by an Indian maiden named Shalafawha. The dream takes her back in time, where she witnesses a man being shot with an arrow and three men searching for him. Maud wakes up and realizes that her dream may have a deeper meaning.
The story ends with the hope that Maud's heart will be touched by the spirit of the season.
Overall, "Okefenokee Christmas" is a tale of redemption and the power of forgiveness set in the mysterious and enchanting Okefenokee swamp.
