About the Book
After the death of Jeanette, her 91 year old mother, a daughter rediscovered a long lost box of letters. Written to Jeanette, by her college boyfriend Mel, several years before their marriage, the letters span Mel's draft notice, through training at Camp Roberts and Fort Benning, and on to Korea. A young man ahead of his times-- falling deeply in love, witty, vulnerable, literate, romantic and, at times, darkly funny--conscripted to the dull banality of Army life, and the acute experience of an awful war. It's a love story, sure, and much more; not so much a tale of combat, but of longing, a fish out of water, and the maturing of a philosophical young man trying to make sense of a senseless situation, with wonderful descriptive passages and hilarious but often painful truths. You'll want to share this rich expression of young love and midcentury, wartime courtship.
