About the Book
This is the 6th book showcasing our collection of Judy Garland costumes, jewelry and furniture. Brown Satin Dress, The Poppy Dress, Our Barcelona Chairs, Judy’s Joseff Earrings and More Judy all came before End of an Era.
End of an Era was a San Francisco store which opened in September 1970 selling MGM costumes, props, furniture and more. It was the ultimate rummage sale.
We don’t remember how we learned of the store but by December we purchased our first item, Judy Garland’s navy crepe panties worn in Summer Stock, for $4.00. We made more visits to End of an Era sifting and hunting through boxes and boxes of costumes, undergarments and shoes. We eventually found 2 corsets, 2 panties, 2 slips and a blouse.
Research for End of an Era was an amazing journey requiring subscriptions to data services providing access to old San Francisco newspapers. It took us 50 years, but we now know the story of the store that was a source of some wonderful and treasured Judy items.
A gracious thank you to Michael Stepanian who told us his story. And thanks to Charles Triplett, the Judy wizard, for so many of the rare images featured here.
