About the Book
Celebrating a half-century of taking photographs, Daniel Miller offers fifty extraordinary images from his work and journeys in Nepal, Bhutan, Tibet, India, Southeast Asia, Mongolia, and the American West. Taken from 1974 to 2024, these images are complemented by numerous smaller photos and insightful text that describe the lives of nomads and cowboys, the livestock they care for, the celebrations they are a part of, and the rangelands and mountains they call home. Part memoir and part ethnographic portrait, Fifty Years Among Nomads and Cowboys is a unique record of little-known landscapes and cultures by a former cowboy, rangeland ecologist, and international development specialist.

Bought my first camera, a Canon FTb, in 1974 when I went to Nepal for the first time. For most of the last 40 years I have been working with nomads in Afghanistan, Bhutan, China, Mongolia, Nepal and Tibet. Although I still use a Canon F-1 manual camera, I increasingly find the photos on my iPhone to be quite satisfactory.
