About the Book
On November 17–19, 2023, Randall Smith and his grandson, Luke Bean went on a road trip on Highway 89. Armed with old cameras loaded with black and white film, the two followed the iconic Utah highway, beginning in Salt Lake City and stuck with it all the way to Page, Arizona. Along the way, Randall and Luke shot photos of whatever seemed interesting. Unlike today’s digital photography, there’s no way of knowing if the photos they were shooting were working or not. Some turned out to be overexposed, some underexposed. Some were accidentally exposed to light while loading and unloading the film; but such is the surprise and sometimes the advantage of shooting with film. A selection of both Luke’s photos and Randall’s photos are assembled in this booklet as a shared memory—not so much of the photographs they took, but instead of the good time they had.
