About the Book
Spirits of the Sky
The dream of flight came to fruition after centuries of dreaming, study, speculation and experiments preceding the first successful flights.
Philosophers believed that it could be accomplished by imitating the wing motions of birds and by using smoke or mechanical devices.
The practical development of aviation took many various paths during the 19th century.
The aeronautical engineers and inventors were far sighted theorists who tested their ideas with experiments involving kites and controlled man carrying gliders.
The American brothers Wilbur and Orville Wright based their work on ideas and theories and first flew a glider with mixed success in 1900.
By 1902 they had built a successful glider and on December 17th 1903 near Kitty Hawk North Carolina they made the world’s first successful flights in a powered and controlled heavier than air craft of a type they called the Flyer.
The dream of man controlled flight through the skies had begun and the spirits of the sky were now real.

I set up and established Plane Crazy Artwork in 2001 as a specialist aviation art print studio that produces digital artwork prints taken from my personal collection of aviation artwork . Being the son of an RAF Crew Chief I have always had a keen interest in aviation which goes back to the years when my father served in the V Force during the 1950-60's . All of my works are drawn using ideas taken from moments in aviation history and by talking to the people concerned . Chris Caple 2010
