About the Book
For Wayne Westfall, turning sixty meant he'd spent exactly half his life as a quadriplegic. So, on his fifty-ninth birthday, he decided to mark this milestone by writing a poem a day for the next 365 days, publishing fifty-nine of them by his sixtieth. The result is SOUTH OF SIXTY, a collection of poetry that also features Wayne's remarkable original art.
Wayne broke his neck in a climbing accident in Alaska in 1979 and, although he is paralyzed from the neck down, his is what he calls "a break of fortune" —a C5-C6 Spinal Cord Injury allowing him the luxury of being able to flex his wrists, which means he can type, hold a fork, a pen and a paintbrush.
Wayne's sketchbooks and paintings were digitized by Wayne's friend Janeson Rayne, a graduate of the Fine Arts Program at Queen's University, who also designed and produced the book.
