About the Book
James Sowerby created these intricate hand-tinted prints between the years 1796-1812. Lichens, symbiotic associations of a fungus with a photosynthetic partner, are not usually considered the subject of high art. These drawings exalt the modest fungi to their rightful place as fascinating and beautiful elements of the botanical world. These drawings were discovered at the bottom of a box of books purchased at an estate sale, and lovingly restored by the author.
