About the Book
The photographs in this book were made during two three-week-long trips to China, in 2004 and then again in 2008. They are the result of visits to numerous small villages, and a few large cities, where crafts of various types allow the residents to make their livelihood. Several of the workshops cluster in or around China's porcelain capital, Jingdezhen. Others are near Xian, the home of the Terra Cotta Solders, or in Beijing. Still more are scattered in Yunnan Province, in or near the cities of Kunming, Dali and Lijiang.

Photography is a second career for me, a return to a major interest of mine since childhood. It follows a successful primary career as a packaging designer and design firm executive in Manhattan. My photography seeks to demonstrate what I believe are similarities between photographs and consumer product packaging: both aim to tell a story in a confined space, to maximize the emotional impact on the viewer, to explain and to educate.
