About the Book
I am in the habit of keeping a drawing journal. For one year, beginning in November 2005, I drew each night on a special paper that defies permanent imagery. This paper, when painted on with brush and water, yields marks that resemble ink - except in that, as soon as they are made, they immediately begin to evaporate. So these drawings, as you see them here, no longer exist except in photo documentation. In fact, each photo shows how the drawing looked only for a moment. As each image disappeared I took photos of the various stages of their evaporation, recording how the lines gradually softened, the shapes thinned and shrank, and the gestures evolved accordingly. In their inevitable demise they resemble the gradual fading of the bouquets of cut flowers which each drawing represents.
The images in this volume are a selection of the horizontal drawings from that year.
