About the Book
(Artist Book, 160 pages/Seiten, 11x13 inch/28x33 cm) The black and white images in this volume are based on found footage from Vinnitsa/Ukraine, that I discovered last summer (2011) in one of the city's former communist newspaper buildings. Approx. 10 000 negatives could be saved from pending disposal and were taken to Germany. One year later, almost all of the negatives have passed through a meticulous scanning process, revealing images from 'the long winter' - as the Breshnew years are called in the Ukraine, images that show life under Communist rule in Vinnitsa/ Ukraine.
This found footage of the old days is confronted with found imagery of the digital age: within seconds over 500.000 color pictures can be generated using the google search engine (keyword 'Vinnitsa'). What pops up is contemporary and World War II related: the Cold War footage from Vinnitsa - regarded to be waste - is filling the gap. Assembled and built in are the first spreads.
