About the Book
These sculptures, right across the street from English bay, add a twist to going to the beach at English bay.
In its original context -- modern China -- the sculpture grouping A-maze-ing Laughter is a sardonic comment on the repression of dissent and how people respond to it.
But put it on the beach at Vancouver's English Bay, and it is transformed into a marvelous piece of interactive art that beguiles all visitors and especially delights children.
This book celebrates the latter, while being mindful of the former.

I grew up in Alberta but left to go to photography school in Toronto. I graduated from Ryerson in 1981 but having wanted to photograph the prairies with my age, I received a grant big enough and immediately drove to Calgary. Thankfully I could stay at my brother's place. It was an incredible summer. see my website www.martinprairies.com/
