About the Book
A 10x8 80 pg book. 47 black & white photographs of laborers and industrial workers on the job in Detroit, Michigan and mid-western states from 1979-1995. All photographs by Russ Marshall, former Detroit labor photographer. Most of the photographs are juxtaposed with 25 poems by eleven concerned poets empathetic to the working class of America and the circumstances of their experiences. Many of the poets have experienced these same working conditions with jobs in auto plants, steel mills, etc. Although most of the poems were created independently from the photographs they are paired with, there are several that were written for specific photographs. Many of the photographs have been published in magazines and books and have been gallery exhibited. Almost all of the poems have been published by the poets in their own books and in literary journals, etc. A few of the poets with Detroit roots are Philip Levine, Jim Daniels, Hank Malone. Peter Putnam, a Henry Ford Community College professor, contributed 3 poems.
