About the Creator
Born in 1939, Ray Schutte earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the University of Colorado in 1963. Watercolor was the medium of his choice. While teaching art, in California he produced photographs that combined silver with non-silver processes, imposing geometric structures on landscapes and juxtaposing words on images. Although trained in abstract expressionism, he came to appreciate pop, minimal and conceptual art that followed. His photographs explored elements of all four movements. He began exploring digital photography and inkjet printing in 2005. Building an image rather than printing an image became the focus of the exploration. The writings of Clement Greenburg on color, Lawrence Alloway’s discussion of Systemic Painting, and the hidden geometry in work of Barnett Newman provided him context. Ray Schutte currently lives in Seattle, Washington. A representative portfolio of his work can be found on his web site www.rayschutte.com
