About the Book
Curious about the land high up in the Himalaya, 5 photographers flew to Paro, the only international airport in Bhutan. There we met with our Bhutanese guide Anan and driver Dophu to embark on a 2-week journey through the rugged mountains. Starting in the capital, Thimpu, we visited temples, monasteries, monastic schools for young monks, the only art college for the preservation of the cultural heritage, many villages and a school for Nepali guest workers. We encountered many smiling people, and saw the hard work with oxen and ploughs to cultivate the land that feeds the small population of Bhutan. We traveled on the only West-East road that spans the country for ~1000 km and at our most Western point, marveled at the intricate masks and colorful costumes of the dances at the Jakar Tchechu. All along the way, we could see the ever-present prayer flags carrying the prayers to heaven. It was a journey into a magical and mystical land and we returned transformed and might be yearning for a simpler life.
