    About the Book

    Edit

Bilingual catalog (French and English) on Mathieu Laca's "Mort ou vif" exhibition held at the Modulum gallery in Montreal in 2012. This book features every painting of the show (around forty) and texts by Normand Babin (in French) and Sanita Fejzic (in English). It's an insightful visual incursion into the practice of this exciting young painter. Visit the exhibition website here: http://mortouvif.weebly.com/

"Mathieu Laca’s art confronts, shocks, demands, provokes. It is elegant and bare in its frankness and effect. And is immediately felt. Stimulated by complex layers, symbols and strokes, the viewer’s sense are triggered and stirred: a deep psychological penetration, an uncomfortable examination, a tender and brutal duel between artist and his desires and obsessions." Sanita Fejzic

«Les yeux des protagonistes des toiles de Laca ont la lourdeur d’un passé, la vision de la brièveté de l’avenir, la sourde sauvagerie latente.»

«Chez Mathieu Laca, il y aura toujours cette valse entre sublime et trivial, entre admiration et dégoût, entre larmes et crachats. Les dieux ne sont pas

si dieux que ça : ils sont hommes.» Normand Babin

    Mathieu Laca
    Laval, Québec, Canada

I was born in 1982 in Laval (Quebec), Canada. I completed a BFA, which included a major in painting and drawing, at Concordia University in 2005. In the last year, I was represented by the Patrick John Mills gallery in Ottawa and was the featured artist at every one of its monthly collective exhibitions. I’ve encountered great success there and could establish relationships with many collectors. I’ve also had a solo exhibition in Quebec city in 2010 at the L’espace contemporain gallery as part of the Altern’art festival. I participated to many group shows in the past. Solitudes urbaines at the Maison des arts de Laval in 2005 and Génération Montréal ville peinture curated by Marc Séguin in Montreal in 2002 to name a few. My work is collected in Canada and abroad in countries such as the United States, Germany, Norway and Israel. The American book “100 Artists of the Male Figure” features my work and many arts magazines have also published it. Among them, Le Forum des Arts in France...
