About the Book
This book is the result of a junior high school art project that was assigned by my teacher, Mr. Guentner, who taught at Muirlands, in La Jolla, California. It was either in the 7th, 8th or 9th grade that I wrote and drew the images for this story, based around the character, Sammy. I can't remember the exact date, but I know it was created between the years, 1981 and 1983. The character of, Sammy, was inspired by a cartoon my older brother, Joel Farson, used to draw on his high school notebooks. I imitated this character, named him Sammy and developed him into the protagonist of my story depicting a 1970's era surfer dude who went on an adventure in search for good, uncrowded surf.
I began surfing in the mid to late 70's by the urging and sometimes harsh demands of my older brother, Joel, who began surfing because of the urging and harsh demands of our oldest, half-brother, Clark Farson. This story reflects my own experiences of surfing in both, southern and Northern California. I was raised between two coastal towns during the 1970's and 80's. I continue to surf and I continue to seek good, uncrowded waves....
The original book is now watermarked and deteriorating. I used my Photoshop skills to clean up and rejuvenate the images. Ironically, I am now a high school art teacher who assigns like projects for my current art students at High Tech High International in San Diego, California.
This book is dedicated to my dear, late grandmother, Jerry Halleman, who urged me to do something with this little story that she loved so much.
