Real Geisha Real Women is a project created in 2008 by photographer/mixed media artist, Peter MacIntosh about the lives of the people in Kyoto's hanamachi-(geisha districts) as well as other districts throughout Japan. Utilizing his connections cultivated over the past three decades living in Kyoto, he wants to share his unique glimpses into "the "karyukai-"flower and willow world" deeper than the usual posed images and show the "real" women behind the painted faces and the closed doors.
