About the Book
Even after living in Glasgow for several decades, fascination by the detail of the Glasgow landscape remains and re-emerged within this project, largely through the apparent limitations of the camera. Recently, circumstances had temporarily restricted my photographic hardware to an elderly and rather grubby iphone augmented with a Polaroid-style app. Vision was narrowed by this combination, as it rendering small objects and detail more successfully than wide landscapes. A patina, colour balance and presentation offer a new perspective on the city.
The concept that emerged was to represent Glasgow through the minutiae of its streets:
i see in the street where strong
men are digging bread
and i see the brutal faces of
people contented hideous hopeless cruel happy
and it is day,
(e.e.cummings 'the hours rise up')
The images were made within a couple of weeks in the summer of 2013 during a relatively extended period of hot, sunny weather and otherwise warm and fairly, but not totally, free from stormy summer rain.
