About the Book
After the dark of winter spring arrives with the dawn quietly,
on tip toe, to Mashomack Preserve.
It flies in on the wings of returnig osprey, heron and bluebird.
Then it unfurls in a rush of light and suddenly, surprisingly,
It is deep green summer.
Mashomack, named by the original Manhanset inhabitants means “
Where They Go By Water". The preserve, maintained by the Nature
Conservency consists of 2,039 acres of woods and fields surrounded
by water and laced with creeks, kettle ponds fresh water wetlands
and salt marshes. It comprises almost one third of Shelter Island,
an island sheltered between the north and south forks on the eastern
end of Long Island, New York.
