About the Book
Nurmuhemmet Yasin was arrested in 2004 after his publication of ‘Wild Pigeon’ in the Kashgar Literature Journal.
In this fable, a political allegory, a princely bird is captured by humans and caged. He longs for freedom and, in the end, prefers to die rather than live in captivity.
The issue of the journal in which the story appeared was pulled out of circulation, and ‘Wild Pigeon’ remains banned in China.
After a closed trial in February 2005 in which he was not permitted to hire a lawyer, Yasin was sentenced by the Maralbeshi County People’s Court to 10 years in jail for inciting Uyghur separatism.
Nurmuhemmet Yasin is an honorary member of the English, American, and Independent Chinese branches of PEN, an international writers group.
This book features illustrated translations of ‘Wild
Pigeon’ and the essay ‘What is love?’
