About the Book
This book takes a selection of images that were captured during the 1972 visit of the Seventh Delegation to the People's Republic of China. The early visits by John W. Lewis and his colleagues were part of a pioneering effort by those who had created the National Committee on US-China relations in the 1960s. When the delegation arrived, they came at the height of the Vietnam War. That night, US bombers for the first time had hit the capital of North Vietnam, Hanoi. Due to this, the delegation was unable to meet Premier Zhou Enlai, the man who had invited them. So instead, they decided to go on an adventure and see China. This book is a small selection of the photos Lewis captured during that first visit.
