About the Book
In his series POLAROIDS (2006-2012) Chad Coombs takes existing and self-created images and collages them together into new visuals. Capturing his creations onto Time-Zero film, Coombs then scrapes the outer layer of the Polaroid manually with screws and nails. The carvings often replace the sitter’s hair and frame as dark lines with designs often crowned upon the subject's head. With these Coombs is able to add sharp contours to his subjects without destroying their blurred impression. This contrast emphasizes the gentle beauty and delicacy of facial features even further. The resulting works are reflections of the way Coombs sees the world that surrounds him, and his longing for a stronger connection with everything seen.
