About the Book
An Artist Statement: While contemplating a historical "Then and Now" photography project with the Putnam Arts Council we examined as a group how to illustrate the beautiful and historic architecture of Putnam. As a photographer in the group, I was delegated to work on the project. I posed the idea of integrating the two time periods into one image, an idea I had wanted to do for some time as a personal project. Figuring we were the Arts Council it deemed appropriate to do something clever and different. As a group we agreed that we all enjoyed looking at the "then and now" photographs that are presented locally through the Historical Society as well as the local papers. This seemed like the perfect opportunity to try the technique out!
The project morphed from utilizing old photographs to using postcards of Putnam when a colleague of mine from Pomfret School presented them to me in September of 2013. They had belonged to his father and he thought that I, as a Putnam native, would find them interesting. It wasn't long after that that the new concept of Putnam Post was created. It served as a perfect platform for our journey through Putnam examining the historical and modern architecture. While there were creative and technical challenges that presented themselves, I found the final outcome was an interesting reflection on how much we as a town have physically changed and remained the same.
We hope that you enjoy Putnam Post and find time to look around town a little bit to see how we have grown and changed.
