About the Book
Beyond the Bus documents the summer journey of African-American and Jewish teenagers in Operation Understanding DC. They met with key civil rights leaders in the South, and visited important sites in the historic - and ongoing - civil rights struggle. Their mission is to learn and carry forward the cooperation between their two groups, and to become effective leaders in promoting cooperation and tolerance, and to combat racism, bigotry, and injustice. The book also includes a powerful suite of images of the participants posed for police-style arrest mugshots with messages carrying forward the vision of the original Freedom Riders.
