About the Book
This book presents an unashamedly nostalgic look back to Zimbabwe's steam locomotive operations of more than thirty years ago.
This is the real thing: no charter trains, no posed 'line-ups', no photographic run-pasts, no 'arranged smoke', no locomotives painted in gaudy colours. This is real steam, as it was. The winter of 1982 proved, in hindsight, to have been an excellent time to undertake a dedicated photographic tour of Zimbabwe, even if things were still a little tense. (The civil war - if that is what it was - may have been over officially but there were still isolated incidents of insurgent activity taking place.) The well known Garratt refurbishment programme was in process, so pristine ex-works locomotives were to be seen. Furthermore, the routes that saw steam line operation at the time were quite extensive and in little more than a year several of them would be history, as far as regular steam traffic was concerned.
"A Zimbabwe Journey" incorporates extensive coverage of Bulawayo, as this was the hub of steam operations in Zimbabwe. Many memorable night photographs are a special feature of this book. All the then active steam routes are covered including the Bulawayo - Gwelo main line, Gwelo - Selukwe, Gwelo - Fort Victoria, Bulawayo - West Nicholson, Bulawayo - Thomson Junction, and
Thomson Junction - Victoria Falls. The steam operations at Wankie colliery are not forgotten.
The book will naturally appeal to railway and steam enthusiasts, particularly fans of Garratts - this was Garratt country. Those with a fondness for Zimbabwe generally, will also find much of interest in this Volume, which is a slightly revised edition, expanded to 130 pages, colour corrected, and with striking black-and-white covers.
