The visual arts are uniquely equipped as vehicles that promote understanding. Unlike languages, which require an act of translation to the uninitiated, a work of art can speak for itself, without interlocutors. This is not to deny the complexity of art, but rather to celebrate the possibility of works of art to act as ambassadors among various cultures. For this reason, the Department of Art & Art History at the University of Colorado Boulder is committed to international artistic exchanges. We are most pleased that many of our faculty and students are participants in the present exhibition in Bosnia-Herzegovina and hope that this event helps promote a rich and fruitful dialogue that advances the cause of peace.
