About the Book
My goal seemed simple enough when I began. I would make a series of photographs, 101 portraits to be exact, of people from one year of age to one hundred, as well as a newborn. I was eager to show the progression of age, from early innocence to the weight that life experience brings to us in our later years. I wanted to show the uniqueness of each individual. Yet I also wished to see past the various shapes, sizes, and cultures of my subjects—our differences, so to speak—to reveal the bonds, the similarities that tie us all together. And before my journey was finished I desired for something greater. I longed to make that grand leap and to connect with the spirit of each of my subjects. I hoped to share that reflection of the Divine that I believe lives within each of us. Lofty dreams and goals, I know. But to me it makes more sense to reach for a star just out of one’s reach than to pick up the apple that has already fallen from the tree.
