About the Book
In this shocking photographic documentary that is ultimately a story of hope and a tribute to strength and love, award-winning Canadian photographer Michael Willems shows a world many of us will never see: the tough world of Toronto hard drug use - and the triumph of escaping from it.
Michael spent several months witnessing a drug den. A world of addiction, where free will has ceased to exist. Where "IV" means not just "euphoria", but also "paranoia, "pain", and "depression". Where every moment is consumed with the need for more cocaine and heroin. Where drug dealers steal and lie.
Michael and the victims of addiction, who became his friends, share that dark world here - but this is a positive story: they share their hope, and the story of the victims' strength, their art, and their eventual redemption and recovery.
Part of the proceeds of this book go to CAMH, the Toronto-based Centre for Addiction and Mental Health.
Note: This book contains nudity and graphic images of drug use.
