About the Book
Confucius A-Z provides an introduction of Confucius (551-479 BCE) to the world of the 21st century by (1) underscoring the psychological basis of his teaching and (2) demonstrating Confucius' own declaration that "my Dao is all-in-one." While there is no essay or treatise on either of these topics by Confucius himself as yet excavated, the fascinating exercise of piecing together one-liners from The Analects, together with the opening essay of The Great Learning by disciple Zengzi and the opening statement of The Zhongyong by grandson Zisi, points to the likelihood that Confucius grounded his teaching on his Dao in his many years of conferencing with his students. His Dao depends on the self-actualization of each individual, while self-actualization entails working with innate psychic faculties to elevate one’s own being. This practice yields fulfillment and happiness and enables harmony and peace on every level—psychological, interpersonal, social, organizational, world. As extraordinary a person as Confucius was, his disciples depicted his singing, dining, mourning..., and captured him in intimately human moments as humble, bemused, delighted, anxious, persistent, grief-stricken. This manual places Confucius’ world mission in the context of a brief history of The Confucian Canon and includes a biographical sketch of the man himself. The discussion of each topic concludes with a list of quoted passages in Classical Chinese, in the order cited.
