About the Book
From O’Neill’s and Hutzler’s Department Stores to Prettyman and Scarborough Halls, the garments in this exhibit represent 150 years of interconnected fashion history between Baltimore and Towson University. The Towson University Historic Clothing Collection, developed for teaching, sharing, exhibiting, and inspiring, features original garments from the early 19th century through the 20th century when Baltimore was a fashion center for the Mid-Atlantic area.
Curated by Assistant Professor Julie Potter, research and exhibit design by Kathy Abbott and Emily McCort.
Begun by Professor Emeritus Georgia Baker in the early 1970s, the Collection holds over 2,000 pieces. Professor Baker accepted donations from private donors, as Costume Shop Manager Cheryl Partridge documented and archived these artifacts. Special thanks go to them for their work building this collection over the 35 years they called Towson University home.
