About the Book
I see the world through my viewfinder as a painter perhaps would, or as painters would once have done. As far as photography goes, the world is a purely visual affair for me, without narrative or meaning but capable of great mood and atmosphere. It is material for a predominantly aesthetic experience. But it is an aesthetic experience rooted in the everyday. For all their formal concerns and abstraction, I hope my pictures convey a real sense of the world. The quiet mystery of afternoon shadows on a sleepy corner of red brick Brooklyn in Like a Prayer (picture 1) should be familiar to residents of Carroll Gardens or Boerum Hill. And Freeway (picture 2) somehow manages to bottle my memories of that quintessential American traffic artery, the Hollywood Freeway, baking in the sun of Downtown Los Angeles.
