About the Book
Themes are usually related to a place, a person or persons, an event or events, culture or a culture; and while these photographs assemble a number of themes, however diverse they may be, they are united superficially by the time period (2013 - 2016) over which they were taken. A period in time, however, cannot hide the spirit that characterizes it, that forms it: unity in narrative thus appears in unexpected places, and filters down from distant and often surprising geneses.
Starting and ending with two voyages to two extreme endpoints of Europe (Portugal and Norway, with all their social, economic and cultural differences, especially during a period of financial crisis), this collection is otherwise devoted to locations in France: Versailles, Poissy, and Bazoches-sur-Guyonne (II), including Le Corbusier's Villa Savoye, Alvar Aalto's Maison Louis Carré, and works by Anish Kapoor; Saint-Maur, Boé, and Yzeure (III); the countryside of the Lot-et-Garaonne (IV), including the outer extremities of the Forêt Landaise, the expansive forest that crosses the neighbouring French département to the Atlantic coast; Collioure and the Catalan coast (V); Nérac and an encounter with the graphic novelist Charles Burns (VI), including works by Philippe Dupuy; and La Cellulose de Buzet, a partially abandoned wood-pulp factory in Buzet-sur-Baïse (VII). Importantly, this collection ends with a personal note, and what was an extremely rich and emotionally charged journey.
