About the Book
Elizabeth Lennard took these photographs between 1978 and 1983, when she returned to her hometown New York after having lived in Paris. She says: "The rectilinear brick and steel cityscapes came into focus for me after experiencing the Gothic and Haussmanian curves of Paris. This was how I saw New York City. The visual, literary, and emotional references for some of the photographs are Edward Hopper, John Dos Passos and Blaise Cendrars, all of whom chose New York City at one point, as their subject. "
The photographs are hand-painted black & white, silver gelatin prints made by the artist, a technique she began utilizing in the early Seventies.
